« Why Reformulate? »

I have to agree with other negative reviewers; the previous gel cream was perfect and was responsible for introducing me into the La Mer line as a whole. It used to sink into my skin comfortably and would lay the perfect canvas for radiant foundation application. I tried a small sample jar of this new version and, to my dismay, it turned my face into a slippery mess just like any other $50 water cream. I also sadly noticed that cyclopentasiloxane (a silicone) has moved up on the ingredient list to surpass algae extract (miracle broth), which means that there is more silicone than miracle broth in this new “improved“ formula. I cannot help but wonder what motivated the product team to create this reformulation? Did anyone actually ask for this? Overall I am very disappointed and not sure what I will do when my jar of the old formula runs out.

« Caused a terrible breakout. »

This is not my first La Mer product. I currently use the Cleansing Oil (which is amazing) and the Treatment Lotion. This gel cream is terrible. I put this on at night, and in the morning, I woke to a face that had 27 pimples. Yes, 27. Today, Sephora just posted the full ingredients list, which was not included with the deluxe sample. (The sample said to see the salable product for ingredients.) Cyclopentasiloxane and I do not get along, and this cream is packed with it. It’s mostly a bunch of slippery, pore clogging silicones. If you like silicone based products, then this is for you. If not, then stay far away. This line has a few standout products, but this is NOT one of them, in my experience.

« Don’t waste your money. »

I used the original gel for twenty years, safe to say I was addicted to it. When the original was reformulated I was so disappointed, but gave this new one a try. It is NOTHING like the original. The original was cooling, absorbed like a dream, and left my face baby soft. This one does not absorb and leaves my skin feeling tacky. If I could leave no stars I would! Don’t waste your money. This new gel is far inferior to the original.

« No No No!!! »

I still have the old version of the gel cream, I love it and have been using it for 2 years. I got a sample of this new version from sephora and tried it for 10 days, it is heavier than old version. It makes my forehead very oily when I wake up in the morning. It takes longer time to absorb into my skin and also a little sticky. Overall it’s a better idea to change the fabulous gel cream to this cool gel cream! I wish LA Mer could bring back the old one. Not going to purchase this cool gel cream!

« Magic gel that’s removed a facial scar »

I shared this with La Mer as well; they deserve full credit. I have a scar near the right corner of my upper lip, the result of an assault when I was 17. I took a blow across the mouth that opened a gash right through the full thickness of my lip, and I’ve lived with it for over 40 years.About two months ago, I picked up a jar of Gel de La Mer from Sephora (tyvm VIB Rouge!), and have been using it as directed every day. Not only is my face smooth and hydrated, the scar is now softer, smoother, much lighter, and much less noticeable. I’m happy to show before/after pics to give you an idea of the difference this product has made: the pic of me in the gray sweater is from 12/11/2017, the one in the black fleece was taken 1/13/2020.

« Oily Skin's New BFF »

I have oily skin that’s also dehydrated, so it’s difficult for me to find a moisturizer that nourishes without making me more oily. I finally found my dream moisturizer! You only need a tiny amount - there’s a lot of slip to it, so it easily spreads onto the skin. It hydrates without being heavy and the cooling sensation is refreshing. I’ve only been using it for a short time, but I feel like my skin is a little more balanced and smoother, too.

« Too thick & sticky! »

Why oh why did they make a good thing terrible?!? Seriously, the original gel was my favorite. This is too thick and sticky to be a gel moisturizer. The cooling feeling is nice while you apply, but this isn’t worth it.

★★★☆☆

La Mer is a classic, iconic brand and you really feel like you’re spoiling yourself and the smell is wonderful. But it doesn’t justify the exorbitant price for me! I feel like it’s overpriced to the point it is to make it exclusive and bougie and I’m kind of uncomfortable with that messaging. Skincare should not be like that, it’s already expensive and confusing as it is, and I bought La Mer products before I started reading ingredient lists and understood how they/my skin work. Anyway, the ingredients are fairly basic, so a lot of other moisturizers contain them, and you can easily dupe this cream. You’re honestly just paying for the experience to use this exclusive magic cream.

« Calms my roseacea, great moisture retention »

I got this in the trial mini size because I’ve never used a La Mer product, and thought I’d check out the hype. I use SKII Essence and serum, Claudalie toner and mist, and have been trying out Tatcha indigo cream for two months now (and feeling meh about it).I’m 45, with normal to slightly dry skin, roseacea and sun damage. Goes on smooth and a little goes a long way. It does not break me out, and absorbs fast. I noticed a plumper/smoother texture on Day 2, which makes it hard to figure out long term of this will actually improve my skin, but does mean my skin looks amazing. The biggest difference i notice is, usually even wth SFP50 sunscreen on, my face flushes in hot sun, and in the evening is still red when i cleanse - but not using this. I took me three days to figure out, the only difference in my routine was the gelv cream. My roseacea has been kept in check! That, combined with the excellent texture improvement and fast absorption make this 5 stars for me, even at the astronomical price.Silicone for me isn’t inherently “gross“ in cosmetics - it’s also the basis of undereye and decollete patches that prevent wrinkles, and it’s likely why i see results overnight with this gel, because it’s retaining moisture in my skin readout well, and helping calm my roseacea. I can’t use silicone primers, because they DO break me out, and is not consider this equivalent in texture or weight at all to them. I don’t find it to sit on the surface, or be sticky on me. As someone who didn’t try the old version and not dealing with acne (which seems to be a lot of those frustrated with the reformulation), i really love this product, and find it gives me at least short term results better than most products. I plan to buy a jar to see how it performs over 6-12 months.

« Sticky, Oily, and BREAKOUTS! »

I will never understand why La Mer discontinued their beautiful Gel Cream and replaced it with this flaming hot mess. The Gel Cream was healing and non-irritating-- it cleared up the acne I’d suffered from since my twenties. This is... not it. It’s formulated with camphor or mint oil or something else that’s artificially cooling (not necessary) and leaves a sticky film on your skin that never fully absorbs. This film might be what contributes to the breakouts people complain of-- I certainly got a bad case of dermatitis on my forehead when I tried the sample of this. I’m switching away from the La Mer brand in general right now, because while they were the best thing in skincare 15 years ago, so many wonderful new brands are out on the market that are just as gentle and healing and don’t test on animals. Good riddance, La Mer and parent company Estée Lauder.

« reformulated and now terrible »

When La Mer was bought out, this moisturizer was reformaluated and now does absolutely nothing. Not worth buying at all. Neutorgena hydro line is much better.

« Acne Town!!? »

I received a sample of this and was excited because I love the foundation. I’m 42 combo in the T-zone and dry everywhere else , acne prone, sensitive skin and a avid, prescribed by my derm, tretin user for a few years now. Before first use my face was blemish free. 3 days in of using this product I currently have 7 good sized acne bumps and a few small whiteheads in various places... it’s the high content of algae in this product that disrupts my skin. This ingredient is high on the list of pore clogging ingredients ( it’s in the foundation as well but not second on the list, it’s relatively lower which would explain why I can use it with no break out issues) If your a person that has issues with pore clogging , white heads , acne caused by algae RUN FAR AWAY!! If not then it is actually a beautiful product!!!

« Dont change a thing that’s already good. »

Disappointed.... after being recommended this by a friend I was not aware of the formulation change.... after I had gotten it, i went home washed my face and put it on.... it was sticky and just sat on top of my skin... so i called her and told her my experience, she then came over and tried the one i had purchased and was shocked and said it was nothing like the one she has at home, so i thought maybe i just bought a defective one....but nope.... sad... if it was the old formulation I would definitely be buying it.

« I can see why it’s $350 »

Ok, I got a free trial size of this. I was so happy about it because I always wondered what $300 moisturizer feels like. Well, I’m impressed. I hate that I love it. I can’t shell out $350 for 2oz of moisturizer but I may just have to find a way!

« Making my miniature trial size last »

Got a free trial size of this....have always wanted to try a product from La Mer. #1, this trial size is simply the smallest jar I have ever received, it’s like miniature trial size....#2, probably one of the best creams I have used....and I’ve used many. My skin is dry in the morning and oily starting mid day, I have occasional breakouts, and sensitive skin. I have been using as little of this cream as possible every morning to try and make it last as long as possible. I have no issues with being oily, maybe a little blot around 3ish, but nothing like I have had in the past. The smell is like waking in a flower shop filled with roses. Love it. If I could spend $300+ on just ONE product, this would be it.
