« GOOD FOR A CLEAR COMPLEXION »
I just bought my second tube of Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask after using the mask regularly for the past 8 weeks. I’ve found there are a few tricks to getting results with this mask after my first couple of experiences with it were less than stellar.1. This is not your typical clay or mud mask. Charcoal works differently on the skin and I’ve found it essential to have a pre-mask ritual, which consists of opening my pores in one way or another. I usually use the mask after a bath or a warm shower so my skin is flushed and moist and my pores are open. Otherwise, a hot compress applied directly to the face for a minute or two will open the pores and prep the skin for this mask (and it feels great). I found that when I didn’t prep my skin this way the results were disastrous: the mask pulled at my skin, was nearly impossible to scrub off, left me with red and blotchy skin from the effort and did not appear to clear away any dead skin or black heads clogging my pores.2. After opening the pores quickly (so the skin is still warm and the pores are still open when the mask is applied) work a gentle exfoliant over the skin and rinse off in warm/tepid water. The exfoliating action of a wet washcloth might be enough, depending on the sensitivity level of your skin. I alternate between a washcloth and a gentle face scrub with micro beads.3. Apply a THIN layer of the mask. I normally pile on a mud or clay mask but it took upwards of 4 (!) washes with my strongest, heavily foaming face wash to remove the charcoal mask when I applied it thick. A good rule of thumb is to apply it so that there are no streaks or transparent patches but not so thick as to have a ridge forming where skin meets mask. It is not a peel off mask.4. Let it sit until just barely dried. When it no longer comes off onto the fingers after a gentle pat across the face then it’s about time to wash it off. I waited 15-20 minutes the first few times I used it (thinking the longer it was on the more work it would do) and that was a huge mistake. The longer it sits dry on the skin, the harder it was to remove and the more red, sensitive, itchy and blotchy my skin was after. Plus, having it sit so long as to pull and tug at the skin as it (over)dries is uncomfortable. There is no recommended drying time on the tube but for me in a relatively dry climate, I leave it for about 7-10 minutes.5. Even following the steps above doesn’t make it a particularly easy mask to remove. It takes me two rinses with an otherwise effective, foaming face wash, really working it into the mask before turning on the faucet and rinsing it off. A washcloth actually works better. You can get all of the mask in one go with a wet cloth and the skin is so squeaky clean after there is no need to follow with a cleanser.Blackhead removal is super easy after all of the steps above, which is a plus. The mask doesn’t seem to actually pull the blackheads out though the way a pore strip or some of the peel off masks claim to do. My regular use of the mask (2-3 times a week, which is more than recommended) has made my skin drier than it used to be so I am backing off to only once or twice a week (I like a good cleansing mask, what can I say). I like the immediate appearance of clarity that it gives my complexion so I highly recommend giving it a try!
« Whitens teeth, too! »
Now before you think I’m crazy, let me warn you first: Don’t swallow it, don’t drink it, don’t ingest it! Haha. Just put a dab of this on your toothbrush and brush for a few minutes. Your teeth will look grey while you’re brushing, but keep doing it. Spit it all out and rinse, rinse, rinse with cold water. Yeah, it tastes bad, but once you rinse it all out, your teeth will sparkle. Activated charcoal is a classic (and cheap) tooth whitener. I use this about once a week to whiten my teeth and last time I went to the dentist, the hygienist couldn’t believe I’d never bleached my teeth. Oh yeah, I work at a coffee shop, so you know I drink a ton of coffee! Also, it’s great on your face...haha.
« Pushes blackheads right out in 15 mins! »
I’m not sure how this mask does it, but when it started to dry, I could see blackheads poking out of the mask surface. It’s like watching baby plants push through the dark soil in the spring. Quite fascinating. (Sorry if it’s TMI.) But this stuff really works!
« 3.4 to 2.5...same price »
Don’t think we didn’t notice that you’re charging the same price for what used to be 3.4 oz, and is now 2.5 oz. Come on Origins.
« Works great! »
I got a sample of it and loved it so much I decided to purchase the full size. Really clears out my pores, it even sucks the pimples dry. I had a huge pimple on my cheek and it deflated that sucker. Plus I like how I look like a hobo around the house and startle my husband.
« Great mask. »
I have very acne-prone skin. it ranges anywhere from a decent-sized grouping of small pimples to huge whopping zits. Sometimes even groups of huge zits. I don’t really like using masks just for the simple fact that I have to sit with it on my face until it dries, and then I can’t move my face and it’s just kind of annoying for me personally. I received a sample of this mask and used it as a regular mask a couple of times. I liked it. I did notice a difference in the redness and size of my breakouts, and they seemed to fade away faster than they normally would have. Then one night I tried putting just a little bit in dots on the exact pimples, sleeping with it and rinsing it off in the morning, instead of all over my face and washing it off 15 min later. It worked amazingly. My zits aren’t completely faded the next morning, but they’re small enough that I can easily cover them with makeup until the next night. It looks kind of crazy cause there are 3-4 forest green dots on my face every night, but it’s worth it. Also, for those wondering, as long as it’s dry before you go to sleep (it takes less than 10 minutes to dry), it won’t get on your pillowcase or really smudge at all. When I wake up, everything is pretty much where it was when I went to sleep. Okay so this is long, but I tried to get as much info in there as possible so that no one has any “but what about...“ questions. Hope this helped, I highly recommend this mask.
« Miracle in a Squeeze Tube »
This product makes me wish I had taken before and after photos to show you all just how blown away I was by this product. You have no idea how skeptical I am of claims made by skincare products, since I often feel as though they can promise too much. The Origins charcoal mask, however, does everything it claims to do. I can’t think of a single con to this product whatsoever. So here was my experience after the FIRST use:After washing my face and patting it dry, I went back over the skin with a semi-hot washcloth to open up the pores. Then I applied the charcoal mask to my face -- the product is actually pretty thin, so to get an even distribution I applied it almost as I would a foundation, using my fingers to rub it in and then pat away any streaks so that every area is covered. The mask dries super fast and you can feel your skin tightening up.Even with the tightening feeling, I was still skeptical as to whether it would actually remove blackheads from the tip of my nose. Let me tell you, after rinsing off the mask (which is easy to do btw) my pores were dramatically clearer. It was a definite, visible improvement even after one use. It got rid of blackheads that even pore strips couldn’t remove. I have no idea how, but it did.The product also soaks up pretty much any oil on your face, so after rinsing you’ll need to moisturize right away. Although I have oily skin, my skin feels very dry immediately after using the mask. That’s why I use this at night, so I can follow with a richer night-time moisturizer. If you have larger pores and blackheads, I highly recommend this mask. For me this is a true miracle in a tube and I’ll be buying this forever. It’s such a great price too for how much you get. Like I said, I can’t find any cons with this product at all.
« FABULOUS Pore Mask »
This is a favorite of mine. At 52, I still deal with the clogged pores in my T-zone and this little helper is my go to mask! My skin looks and feels wonderful afterwards. I usually apply it at night after washing and followed by my nightly regimen. I occasionally get the opportunity to scare the bejeevus out of my kids if they walk in while I have it on but that is just a bonus. I should mention that I have SUPER sensitive skin and this has NEVER aggravated it.
« DIdn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes! »
Let me start off by saying that I have terrible skin. It’s comb-oily-dry, GINORMOUS pores filled with gunk, the beginnings of fine lines/wrinkles, some loss of elasticity, etc. I have tried multiple products to clean out these dang pores. I use my clarisonic daily with the deep pore bristles, salicylic acid face wash and treatments, retinols, scrubs, pore strips....you name it, I’ve probably done it. I initially went into Sephora to purchase the GlamGlow clearing mask that I’ve heard so many good reviews about, but since I was already going to buy Dr.Perricone’s Cold Plasma as well, I figured I’d save some money and try this first, as it also had alot of good reviews. I wasn’t expecting much, as it is modestly priced. I expected MAYBE softer, squeaky clean skin, but that’s about it. OH MY LORD!!! You can imagine my surprise when I saw my skin after I washed it off.....NO BLACKHEADS!!!! I could still see my pores, mind you, as you can’t shrink your pores. But this was the first time in my life that they were completely cleaned out, it just looked like skin! No black spots!!! I just sat there at stared at my face for about an hour, I just couldn’t believe it!! It also makes my skin extremely soft, and it smells delicious. I’m making my husband use it next on his nose. I MAY try the GLAMGLOW in the future, but for now, I’m sticking with ORIGINS Active Charcoal Mask. Buy it, it’s $24!!!! WHat have you got to lose besides blackheads? You will not be sorry, guaranteed. THANK YOU THANK YOU, ORIGINS!!!
« Cleared my skin up after 1 use! »
I’m 24 and i’ve had good skin my whole life. Recently i started breaking out. Literally all over my face. I have dry skin and i tend to stay away from masks because they can dry out my skin a lot. After over 2 months of caking make up on my face to try to hide the pimples, i finally decided to try a charcoal mask. I wanted to get the clinique pore refining one but the sales girl at sephora told me this was better. I went home and i used it. I did not see immediate change and i was bummed. But the next day i woke up and all the bumps i had on my face were no longer red. And the white heads the pimples had were all gone. This mask impressed me a lot. If youre struggling with random break outs i highly recommend this! I’m gonna go ahead and buy more products from origins.
« Amazing! »
I’ve been using this product since it first came out and in my opinion, there isn’t a better port cleanser product out there. I’ve noticed some people saying they haven’t noticed a diference about using it.I have oily/combination skin and my blackheads are worse mainly on my nose and also around my nose are, in between my eyebrows and the area halfway between my lower lip and chin,What I do to prepare my skin for the mask is to make sure I have hot water running in the sink, putting a towel over my head and letting the hot water open my pores for about 3 minutes. After that, I immediately make sure that the mask is massaged into my skin from just below my hairline to just above my neck.Leave the mask on until it is completely dry and hardened, which for me, takes around 15 minutes. When removing the mask, make sure the water is just a bit warm and make sure you remove every nit of it as well.I immediately notice that my pores are no longer clogged! This will not permanently clean out your pores. Although, what product really would?
« too hard to wash off »
I dont know if it is my problem. I cant find a right way to wash the mask. It always take me such a long time :(((PLUS, my pores didnt get any better
« Best mask I've ever owned »
This mask is fantastic for getting rid of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Most of the complaints on here are about the product making people break out, but that’s because this mask brings toxins to the surface. So instead of having an untreated pimple that lasts for weeks, this brings it out immediately and cuts the “life“ of the pimple in half or even shorter. Having said that, don’t use this mask the day before a date or a big event, instead use it a week before your event and repeat weekly. When used as a preventative mask, this will absolutely keep your skin clear. It even gave me a glow and made my skin look smoother by getting all the lingering blackheads out. It is drying, so follow with your best moisturizer to avoid your skin flaking or overproducing oil, especially if you use any acne cream after the mask. This mask is also great for chest blemishes/blackheads if you have them. Sometimes if I have a very deep and painful pimple, I will apply a small amount as a spot treatment overnight, but I only do this sparingly to avoid dryness.
« WONDERFUL mask! »
I have adult acne and have been using skin clearing masks for awhile. This mask is by far one of my top three I’ve ever used. It’s really affordable too, for what you get and how well it works. It certainly does work “like a magnet“ to draw out all the bad stuff. It left my skin feeling cleaner, smoother, and I even thought I looked slightly more bright in tone. They say to use this once a week, but if you have oily or acne prone skin then I would suggest using twice a week. If you only suffer from time of the month breakouts then use twice that week and every other week, or as needed.Love this mask; I will re-purchase when I run out!
« Made my skin inflamed »
I’ve used this product regularly for 4 years and bought a new bottle recently only to find the new formula agitates my skin. I left the mask on for far less than ten minutes and washed it off only to find red patches of skin where the mask was applied. It almost looks like my skin is sunburnt. This is not something that has ever happened to me before, I’ve even used this product as an overnight spot treatment.Within five minutes of application, it felt link my skin was tingling and burning! Do not use this product, if you have sensitive skin. Even if you are a regular user of this mask, if you buy a new bottle please make sure to do a patch test. It’s nothing like it used to be.
