« I was hopeful but pretty disappointed »

I bought this the day it launched because I have loved all of the Drunk Elephant products that I’ve tried. For a while I was using 4 of their products in my regular routine. I wear a full face of makeup daily and I have been using a cleansing balm for years, so of course I needed to try this.I’ll start by saying the packaging is beautiful, sturdy, and functional just like all DE products. I love the magnetized scoop! However, that’s about the only thing I enjoyed. The balm initially looks the same as the others I’ve used (I’ve tried 5 different cleansing balms) but when I began rubbing it into my palms, it didn’t melt into that nice oily texture that every other cleansing balm does. It just....stayed as this waxy, thick mess. The main reason I love cleansing balms so much is because they turn into a workable oil that melts everything away. This definitely did not do that for me.When I began working it around on my dry face, it was difficult to spread around. I kept adding a little bit more thinking it would help, but it felt like I was spreading beeswax on my face instead of an oil-based cleanser. It was really tugging on my skin, especially around my eye area, even though I was being as gentle as I could. I spent twice as long as I usually do with a cleansing balm, and I didn’t feel like it got through all my layers of makeup, primer, and sunscreen. I had to use an eye makeup remover afterwards to get off the rest of my *non-waterproof* mascara. Honestly it just left a gross waxy feeling on my skin when I rinsed it off.The little bamboo exfoliator that comes with it seems useless as well, because I think most people only use cleansing balms at night to remove makeup. I’ll never add in an exfoliant to my makeup remover. Overall I’m really disappointed and will be returning. back to my tried and true (and cheaper) cleansing balm!

I have tried both the DE balm and the Farmacy green clean. I think they are both great products and it comes down to personal preference when choosing a favorite. I think the main issue some consumers could have with DE is it does leave some residual oils on the skin once rinsed off. I understand these to be beneficial to the skin and I like the “balanced“ feeling but it’s not for everyone. I personally prefer the DE balm of the two because 1) unscented so feels gentler and cleaner 2) leaves skin feelings nourished/moisturized due to the residual oils 3) no film in my eyes (farmacy does this to me)DE- No scent- Very thick, solid consistency that requires slightly more working into hands to break into a balmy oil. almost waxy at first but breaks down into a beautiful consistency- I find warm water works best to lather / rinse as the balm at room temperature is very solid- Leaves skin with smooth, moisturized feel - free of makeup / SPF but not tight or over-cleansed; I will say the natural oils in this tend to stay on skin, I find this nourishing but could come across as “residue“ for those looking for a “squeaky clean“ feelFarmacy green clean- Smells citrusy- Texture is a bit creamier than DE balm which is more solid at first; breaks into balmy oil easily- Find this rinses off quickly and easily due to the creamier texture- Leaves skin feeling clean with no residual moisture like DE, but not tight. I find this also leaves a film in my eyes which is not the best feeling

Very nice and nourishing texture, 5+ magnetic packaging but does not remove my waterproof eyeliner (unless rubbing my eyes like crazy). Hence, I really doubt it does a good job removing my SPF either...

Successfully got three layers of my bulletproof mascara off. Didn’t come quite as easily as the Clinique stuff I usually use but I trust DE way more to take care of my skin.

I’ve tried drugstore (L’Oréal, Physicians Formula) and high end (Clinique, Farmacy, etc.) cleansing balms on my combo to dry skin. This is by far the best for me. I liked Clinique but didn’t love the ingredients so turned to Farmacy - liked it except the finish - it doesn’t wash away cleanly and makes my eyes blurry and filmy if I get the slightest bit in them. Then along came Slaai - great ingredients plus a brand I trust without any film? SOLD.

I’ve used so many cleansers in the past but this is by far the best. It cleanses completely (makeup and all) without drying and it leaves my skin soft and supple.

Drunk Elephant left my face feeling somewhat greasy like a shea butter, but it did an excellent job taking off all makeup including my waterproof mascara. Whereas, the Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway balm doesn’t do the best job of removing waterproof mascara, but Farmacy makes your face feel top notch smooth like a baby’s bottom. Drunk Elephant nails the perfect packaging, as it has a magnetic spoon that sticks perfectly on top of the container. While I will finish this product, I will not repurchase. I felt like DE clogged up my pores, if I didn’t wash it off good enough with a face wash. I suggest trying it out. I bet it’s a hit for some skin types.

A lot of mixed reviews here so I thought I would add one to discuss. I like this. I don’t LOVE it, but it does do exactly what it says it will. It removes my make up well.(better than my cleansing oil from bare minerals). I wear eyeliner and mascara daily and it has taken that off without problem. What I find funny is reviewers saying it smells bad. Which means we are totally conditioned to added fragrances. This products smells like nothing to me and that is because there is nothing added to make it smell good like the million other cleansing balms. I double cleanse so I don’t have an issue with it not feeling competely rinsed off. And it hasn’t caused any breakouts.

I’m thrilled with how well this works! I have dryness around my eyes and wear full face makeup everyday which includes eyeliner, primer, shadow, and two coats of black mascara. This cleanser removed it all! I tried the cleansing powder as well and my face feels so soft and smooth. This has no scent which is fine with me. The amount you get is decent for the price and you don’t need to use a lot. I will definitely purchase this again!

I purchased this product for myself at Christmas this year, it is now September about 7 months later. Every morning I open up my cleanser container and it is FILLED with mold!! I’ve tried wiping it clean, scraping off the top layer, containing it in my fridge/freezer and nothing is working. I’m disgusted! do not buy this product!!!

This product didn’t work for me. It has an extremely thick, sticky consistency that doesn’t come off with just water. I had to use a wet wash cloth and really scrub my face quite hard to get this off. It doesn’t have the same smooth, oil like consistency other makeup removing balms have. Overall, this is going to be a hard pass for me.

I have been using this cleanser consistently for over a year. I have combination skin- oily t-zone and dry skin. I have keratosis pilaris on my face and issues with blackheads on my nose, because my body produces a lot of sebum. This cleanser has been a game changer. Here is how I use it:1. I take out a generous scoop and massage it into my face slowly and gently, to prevent tugging. It starts to melt with body heat and becomes easier to work into the skin. I massage my face in small, upward circles and especially focus on trouble areas (my nose and cheek). This stuff gets out gunk like you wouldn’t believe and the face massage is great for blood circulation & relaxation - bonus!2. When I am done, I turn on the water and let it get hot. I take a baby washcloth and put it into the hot water, ring it out, and drape it on my whole face to steam my face and loosen up the cleanser, then I gently wipe the cleanser away. I repeat this again, a second time. I use a baby washcloth because they are very gentle on the face and because they are thin and dry out quickly.3. At this point, you can leave your face as is. On most days, I choose to follow it up with a gentle non-oil cleanser, for a second cleanse.This cleanser, and my current routine, have been very instrumental in my face become clear, producing less oil, and staying hydrated. If you’re curious, here is what else I use:1. Slaai, 2. Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser , 3. The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics applied to a damp face, 4. The Ordinary 100% Plant Derived Squalane, 5. A moisturizer. I have been using samples of Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Face Lotion, and it is absolutely perfect for me, but that’s really expensive. Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream has worked second best for me.I sincerely hope this can help someone, because it has taken me years of trying to find a combo of products that work for my skin. This cleanser is great, once you get comfortable working with it!

Like another reviewer, my first negative review was deleted so I’m reposting. I can only guess that the product people are receiving is not uniform. For instance, one reviewer claims the product has no smell whatsoever and that we are all so accustomed to scents we think something smells bad if it has no smell. Well, mine smelled BAD. I do not use fragranced products and know the difference. My Slaai smelled like bad oil. Using it was also very problematic. As others have noted it applied in a thick, waxy mess that simply would not emulsify and rinse off. It was like using unadulterated Crisco. I couldn’t even wash it out of my face cloth. I had to use Dawn to get it off my hands. I saw one Youtuber mentioning that the product was better after you got past the top layer. I tried digging deeper and it was remarkably better. It actually emulsified and rinsed off cleanly. I can only guess that some of the jars have “gone off” causing the rancid smell and separation of the waxes from the rest of the product. Only one star because only the bottom half of my jar is usable. That makes the cost $68 for one usable jar. Way too expensive.I have been in contact with DE. Their customer service is top notch. They offered to send me another jar but I’m moving on until they get the issues sorted with this product.

I’m so far enjoying this balm, it feels soothing and removes make up nicely. The texture melts in my hand and distills down into an oil that breaks down my makeup well. It doesn’t sting or dry out my eyes and mascara comes off with a few gentle rubs.Only real negative is I don’t feel like this emulsified at all upon contact with warm water. It turns into this waxy pilling film that somehow thickens the more you try to break it down. It’s not a great feeling what so ever. So the best way to rinse it off is with a soft warm washcloth; it rinses beautifully with that method. It leaves my skin feeling soothed, cleansed without being stripped, and softened. I typically always cleanse with washcloth rather than my hands so it’s not a inconvenient jump for me to use it this way. I don’t like to wear my makeup any longer that I have to, so days when I get home early I felt like this gap of cleansing and then applying nightly skincare hours later occurred. So with this I can remove makeup early while keeping my skin moisturized and comforted, then use my pm gel cleanser and follow with my serums, moisturizers, etc. later on. It seems to fit my routine well and works nicely.I’d say purchase if you use a washcloth to begin with or don’t mind using it instead cause it does work well.

I was super excited to try this product because I absolutely LOVE everything else in the range, however, this did not live up to my expectations. I am a regular user of cleansing balms and oils, so I know how they work and how much to use. While this cleansing balm DID break down all my makeup (including long-wearing mascara), it was near impossible to remove completely without a wash cloth. When I added water, it did not work up into a milky texture like I am accustomed to experiencing with other cleansers like this. While I wasn’t too thriled with balm itself, the bamboo boost that comes with it is great gentle exfoliation. Hopefully they sell it on its own in the future.
